RENATA AVILA IS A HUMAN RIGHTS LAWYER SPECIALIZED IN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY AND TECHNOLOGY WITH MORE THAN A DECADE OF EXPERIENCE WORKING AT THE INTERSECTION OF HUMAN RIGHTS AND INTERNET RIGHTS ACROSS INTERNATIONAL NETWORKS.  SHE HAS WORKED EXTENSIVELY WITH HUMAN RIGHT LAWYERS, TECHNOLOGY INNOVATORS AND DIGITAL ACTIVISTS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD. 

MOST RECENTLY, HER WORK HAS FOCUSED ON GLOBAL ADVOCACY AND STRATEGIC LITIGATION FOR FREEDOM OF ASSEMBLY, FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION, PRIVACY AND SECURITY IN THE DIGITAL SOCIETY. SHE WORKED AS ONE OF THE LAWYERS REPRESENTING THE GUATEMALAN NOBEL PEACE PRIZE LAUREATE RIGOBERTA MENCHU TUM

INVOLVED IN INTERNET AND HUMAN RIGHTS RESEARCH SINCE 2006, SHE COLLABORATES WITH THE INVENTOR OR THE WORLD WIDE WEB, SIR TIM BERNERS-LEE IN AN EFFORT TO UPHOLD HUMAN RIGHTS IN THE DIGITAL AGE.

SHE IS A BOARD MEMBER AT CREATIVE COMMONS AND A MEMBER OF COURAGE FOUNDATION'S ADVISORY BOARD, ASSISTING WHISTLEBLOWERS AT RISK.
